Tree planting is the practice of transplanting young trees or seedlings into a permanent location.

Benefits

Homes with appropriately placed and well-maintained trees and shrubs have higher property values. The right trees planted in the right location help lower heating and cooling costs. Trees create and clean the oxygen we breathe and help to reduce the severity and frequency of flooding, even if your home is located far from a stream.

Homeowner Tips

It’s best to plant trees that are native to this area. Trees planted in the fall are more resilient and better equipped to handle the following growing season. The cooler temperatures and adequate rain are optimal conditions for root growth, allowing trees to establish a strong root system before the harshness of winter and the heat of summer.

When thinking about placement, keep in mind how big the tree will be when it’s fully grown, and how much sun the tree will receive throughout the year. Many a homeowner has had to remove a tree that looked great when planted but was too close to the house when fully grown.

Maintenance

During the growing season, young trees need to be watered every week unless there is .75 inches or more of rain. Once the trees are established, only water young trees showing signs of drought-stress. Trees may need to be pruned to maintain their shape over the course of their lifetime.
