WV Department of Environmental Protection

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) enforces state and federal environmental laws in West Virginia to help protect our air, water, and land.

With the enactment of Senate Bill 217 during a special session of the West Virginia Legislature, the Division of Environmental Protection was established in October 1991. Following years of restructuring and reorganizing, the Division was elevated to a cabinet-level agency in 2001, and thus the Division of Environmental Protection became the Department of Environmental Protection.

The WVDEP’s mission is to promote a healthy environment. To do this, the agency uses more than 800 employees in nine locations around the state to administer programs that allow industry and the environment to coexist.

West Virginia Rivers Coalition

Founded by paddlers and whitewater enthusiasts who cared deeply about restoring and caring for the Mountain State’s renowned free-flowing waters and scenic beauty, West Virginia Rivers Coalition (WV Rivers) is the only statewide organization focused on promoting the overall health of West Virginia’s waters and their downstream benefits.

Thirty-four years later, we are on the forefront of policy discussions in West Virginia as the driving force for preserving and improving water quality. Our analysis, input, and mobilization of citizens and allied organizations is critical to providing balance and credibility in the policy debate. Without our work, the public would not have the facts to hold decision-makers accountable to policies guided by science and the public interest.

West Virginia Rivers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation.

Sleepy Creek Watershed Association

Sleepy Creek Watershed Association is a nonprofit organization working to protect the Sleepy Creek watershed and to educate and assist community members to improve this irreplaceable natural resource for future generations.

We are involved in the community. We offer educational events about practical ways everyone can help take care of our local streams. We help farmers save topsoil and prevent stream bank erosion by connecting them with funding and volunteers. We provide information to help homeowners tap into funding and volunteers for septic repairs or replacement, neighborhood tree plantings, and other best management practices that reduce storm damage and keep our creeks clean.
